Artful Architecture

In terms of mountain architecture, there is joy in simplicity and attention to detail. Within this neighborhood, the architect has created a distinctive Windfall style, one that combines the memorable design elements of early Georgian Bay cottages, cabins and chalets, albeit a modern interpretation of all three. Windfall combines beauty with practicality plus a reverence for tradition with a respect for technology. You’ll see it in our approach to space-planning, energy-efficient design and construction, plus the use of sustainable, resource-efficient building materials including laminated timbers, non-toxic carpets and eco-wise paints and stains. The architect has also gone to great lengths to address the concerns of utility, durability and maintenance, leaving you and your family with more time to focus on just enjoying yourselves on the mountain and along the bay.

Windfall Style is our own fusion of several coastal architectural styles, including Shingle, Saltbox, Carpenter Craftsman and a Georgian Bay interpretation of classic Arts &Crafts Bungalow. The style is uncomplicated and informal yet, because of its proportions and organization, just plain beautiful – a nostalgic reminder of perfect, blue sky days spent with family and friends at the summer cottage or the winter ski cabin.

As part of Windfall Style, garages are tucked in behind houses, partially concealed from view so the focus is on the home. Also out of sight is a backyard deck garden, one that provides additional, very private outdoor entertaining space. In the shingle and siding architectural traditions of early Georgian Bay resort life, every home also features a veranda or a porch. Windfall Style is deeply involved with the climate and ecology of this geological landmark as well as being responsive to the way we like to live when we escape from the city.

“Over the last century, Georgian Bay vistas have strongly influenced the works of artists and artisans including Canada’s renowned Group of Seven. They are the same rugged views of the escarpment and the bay that have inspired the cottage and cabin-like architecture of Windfall and our choice of building materials.”
